According to this article this article the Swedish presidency of the EU is proposing a reform of current immigration policy in order to share the impact of immigration that affects countries like Italy, Spain, and Greece much more than the rest of the EU since they are the first landing point for immigrants from Africa.

Sharing the responsibility would be on a voluntary basis among member states and a system would be made up in order to manage which country takes in whatever amount of refugees to help countries like Greece, Spain, and Italy from becoming overwhelmed.

What do you think about this? Do you think Ireland should help share the responsibility?

I don't think it's a bad idea.

I do believe however it would need to be controlled quite tightly. A number would be allowed in and then time given to them to integrate with the community. once this is done then another group to be let in.

It might be a good idea to have more even dispersal across the EU. Whether the implementation of such a proposal would be possible or could be properly controlled is another matter.

Under the current Dublin II Regulations, which were purportedly introduced to prevent so-called "asylum shopping," asylum applicants are returned to the first EU country they have entered and applied in/had their fingerprints taken/had a valid visa for.

The result is this - Italy, Malta, Greece and the UK being required to take back plenty of applicants.

Although with Greece and Italy's deplorable records in dealing with immigrants with an even basic humanity and acceptable conditions, no migrant should be returned there. And, certainly, the behaviour of those nations should not be "rewarded," let's say, by a proposal such as this one.

Greece and Italy should be severely penalised for their actions and laws, which have been condemned by such organisations as the UNHCR. And the EU should be the one to penalise them.

I think that a coherent centralised policy will work and I've no problem sharing the 'burden' of refugees. It really isn't all that long ago that we Irish were asking for a welcome in countries around the world. It would seem to be selfish to deny a welcome to others on our little blue planet.

I'd be even more happy to see a global approach to fixing the reasons for refugees in the first place.
