The Lisbon Treaty reasserts the EU's goals and motives in relation its international relations. The Treaty states that the EU is to remain committed to promote and uphold the European Union's values in the wider world and contribute to peace, security, the sustainable development of the earth, solidarity and respect among peoples, free and fair trade, and the eradication of poverty, contribute to the protection of human rights, in particular the rights of the child, as well as the strict observance and development of international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter.

The Lisbon Treaty better equips the EU to achieve these goals, and in relation to Africa, the EU will have better mechanisms in place to help support the continent.
