Q.
I hear wind power in Ireland is set to get better EU funding.

A.
In recent days the EU has twice announced that it is to invest money in the Irish wind energy industry.

Firstly the European Investment bank is making €200m available for investment in wind farms in Ireland.

Secondly, the EU's Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs announced yesterday that more EU funds would be made available to support the industry by helping to upgrade the grid in order that Ireland can sell it's surplus energy overseas.

As an island with notoriously bad weather, investment in wind energy will definitely boost Ireland's prospect of becoming a competitive energy exporter and at the same time reducing Ireland's, and the EU's dependence on fossil fuels.

What do people think about wind farms? And can Ireland become a leading player the renewable energy market?

It's about time Ireland started taking wind energy seriously. The west coast is punished by wind! Something that we can really take advantage of. Also, long term, this could be a means to make Ireland a hub for green and renewable energy development. We already have the workforce, the technical expertise and we have proven ourselves in the high tech field.

Long term we could make some seriously money too. The EU increasingly wants to break free from reliance on Russia for it's energy needs, and at the same time reduce reliance on fossil fuels. This could put us in a prime position to take advantage of the change of emphasis in relation to energy needs.

I don't care if wind farms make the country side look ugly. Green energy is the way forward, and Irish needs to find a new niche to take advantage of.

They'd be much better off investing in nuclear power.  Much more reliable.

Actually, scratch that, they'd be much better off returning the money to the taxpayers it was confiscated from in the first place.

I'm all for Nuclear!
France gets 70% of its power from Nuclear. Doesn't need to get stressed over the Russians switching the gas off.
France has never had any nuclear incidents either. Seems safe.
