Although it is nice to know where money is being flushed in different parts of Ireland, is the "EU in your Area" section, not a little preachy? i.e. look at what we've done for you...!

Why isn't there a section for what Ireland has done for the EU? e.g. "EU member states have taken circa €200 billion worth of fish from Irish waters since accession"* - that more than pays for any road partially funded by sign...

* According to Ms Uí Aodha of the Irish Fishermen’s Organisation (IFO) (from Irish Times article, here)

That €200 billion figure is ridiculous. The Fisheries page on this website puts it at €8 billion.
The contribution to Ireland in terms of funding heavily outweighs what we have put in.

Long term we'll be paying more and more into the EU. But we've come a long since 1973.

FYI: The figures mentioned (i.e. €200 billion v €8.5 billion) are under the "Irish fishing: Key facts and figures" heading on the Fisheries page - here.

Think you read the paragraph incorrectly. The text refutes the claim that €200 billion worth of fish were taken from Irish waters and that the real amount was around €8 billion.

Hmmm. Seems to me that that section is about the benefits of the EU. So if I look at it I'd expect to see benefits of EU membership. Although your suggestion might make sense if there was another section entitled 'not just taking handouts: Paying Our Way'. I'd like to know that Ireland is contributing, and not just sitting on the outskirts with our begging bowl.

We're part of Europe, and part of the world, I like to think we are mature enough to play our part without running to half-truths and lies.

Oh - and where exactly will we fish when the fish are all gone?

No Buzz, I didn't read the paragraph incorrectly, as I said I was quoting an Irish Times article, here. Whereas Charlemagne pointed out the conflicting argument, here. I added the 'FYI' link so that people would know what we were talking about...
